Faculty Development

The Consortium acts as a clearinghouse of expertise amongst diverse faculty in the region and creates interdisciplinary continuing education programs for faculty who teach or would like to teach on topics related to the Hudson River. The Consortium:

  • Innovates programs to integrate interdisciplinary ideas, learning, and pedagogy into curricula.
  • Organizes workshops andprograms with field components for faculty to develop lectures/labs/presentations.
  • Maintains a network of diverse faculty available to make presentations at member institutions.
  • Provides information regarding existing institutional programs and courses being taught at member institutions.

River Summer, launched in 2005, is an intensive faculty development program of the Environmental Consortium. The program takes faculty onto the Hudson River to analyze the development of the watershed within an interdisciplinary framework. River Summer focuses on field based learning and active participation by the members. Educators take turns being students and teachers, learning and exploring new disciplines. Through River Summer, the Hudson Valley becomes an extended laboratory and classroom, where faculty members can gain new resources to enrich teaching at their home institutions.
